Charles' Future Starts at Richland

When Charles Davis began classes with Richland Community College’s Highway Construction Careers Program, he didn’t realize what an impact this program would have on his life. “Everything for me exceeded my expectations,” explained Charles.

The Highway Construction Careers Training Program first began at Richland two years ago in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation. Charles was a member of the program’s fifth graduating class.  As part of the program’s curriculum, Charles received certification for seven construction vehicles, OSHA training, as well as first aid and CPR training. “It for sure is a life-changing program. The training from not just the hands-on, but the job-readiness and life skills training, is phenomenal.”

During the 13-week program, Charles took full advantage of all that was offered. “You are taught how to interview, how to build a resume, you’re taught how to hammer a nail, so you learn hard skills and soft skills.”

With these newfound skills, Charles is ready for his next challenge – learning to drive tractor-trailer trucks in order to add to his skill set.  He has big career goals and plans to run his own business in the future. “I plan to drive for a certain amount of time, then look into to trying to create a contract company for myself. In five years, I would hope to be at a level where I could start investing into the company and be my own boss.”
