MATH 240 - Introduction to Linear Algebra

Description:MATH 240 is an introductory course in vectors, matrices, vector spaces, and linear transformations. The concepts discussed in this course not only serve as an introduction to the more abstract courses a mathematics or engineering student meets at the junior-senior level but also have many useful applications outside of mathematics. The course begins with a review of algebra, followed by a study of vectors, vector spaces and subspaces, linear transformations, linear dependence and independence, basis and dimension, rank of a matrix, kernel and range, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, and applications of concepts covered in an introductory linear algebra course. If time permits, the student will learn additional topics such as least squares fitting to data, applications to differential equations, angle and orthogonality in inner product spaces, and quadratic surfaces.
